Reproduction Vintage Report – Silk & Sawdust Breathing new life into classics from the last century, reproduction vintage label Silk & Sawdust recreates vintage-inspired designs from the Twenties through to the Eighties using modern fabrics. The label’s range is hand-tailored by highly skilled dressmakers in Thailand, and all items are carefully cut to fit today’s figures. The idea for Silk & Sawdust came about when London-based designer Claudia Orrell, the entrepreneur behind the label, was living in Thailand working with Voluntary Services Overseas: “I’d made dresses and played with fabric since I was a small child, making my first skirt out of a sheet at the age of six! I’d often worked on commissions for friends and family, but it was only when living in South East Asia, which is so awash with wonderful tailoring skills and stunning fabrics, that I started to see how I could really follow my love of dressmaking and vintage design professionally.” Selling through e-tailer notonthehighstreet.com, as well as evening sales and vintage clothes fairs, Silk & Sawdust launched an initial collection last November. The latest collection comprises 24 unique designs including dresses, skirts, tops and jackets, with items retailing from £55 to £315. The designs are only available in limited numbers, aiming to give customers that same sense of discovery and exclusivity that is experienced when discovering a vintage gem. Claudia, 35, takes inspiration from vintage patterns, books of fashion past and original vintage dresses, coats, tops when coming up with the collections. One of the highlights of the new collection is an interpretation of a dress (left) that Grace Kelly wore in the film High Society. “I saw the film years ago and always wanted a dress like that, and with the exhibition at the V&A this summer, where it’s on display, I wanted to give people the opportunity to own something with same elegance and beauty.” If you are in London and would like to see the collection for yourself, don’t miss the Silk & Sawdust launch party at Champagne Charlies, off Villiers Street on Thursday 13 May. The latest range will be available for customers to touch, feel, try on and buy at the event.
