Reader Sarah wrote in with a tricky style challenge: “Lauren, help me! I’d love a 1950s dress like Roland Mouret’s Galaxy dress, but more sophisticated and less Victoria Beckham. Kate Winslet wears an amazing one in Revolutionary Road. I’m slim-ish, but curvy (a modern size 8-10), and only 5ft 3.” No problem Sarah, Lauren Cooke has got you covered.

I have had my first challenge! I was cocky at first – what with Galaxy dresses and now Moon dresses gracing the pages of every magazine, I wrongly assumed that this request would be easy as pie! However, a quick rummage through my favourite vintage stores showed that Galaxy dresses simply aren’t all that easy to get hold of! 50’s dresses, however, are much easier to find, and come in all shapes and sizes. If you are curvier I would steer clear of bold prints and florals, instead sticking like Kate with simple mono-coloured items or going with texture.

I must say that you have picked the very best style for your shape – emphasising those lovely curves! What I will mention, however, if that many wiggle dress/galaxy dresses are oddly long – so don’t be afraid to hem them a little in order to balance your petite frame. It’s easy to spend a lot of money on a quality dress like this, so I have divided my results into the pricey (if your having a splurge moment), and the more affordable!

Thank you so much for helping me Lauren. I don’t think I would have found these myself, or thought of variations on the theme. My favourite is the dress on page 5, but they’re all gorgeous. Thanks again. Right, what can I get you finding for me next?! Hmm…

    Hi Lauren,

Its my girlfriends birthday next month and she says she would like a 40s hat.

I don’t even know what this means!

    Help me out!
