The Lowball

Also known as the Old Fashioned Glass, or the Rocks Glass, the Lowball is a short tumbler used to serve liqueurs and spirits such as Whisky quite simply, ‘on the rocks’ (over ice), or will contain a cocktail with few ingredients.

Around since the late 19th Century, the Old Fashioned was a cocktail commonly drunk in a Lowball and is made from bourbon, sugar, and bitters, and garnished with crushed ice and a twist. The traditional glass would hold less than 8 floz of liquid.

With a classic straight-up tumbler shape, the Lowball is often characterised by the cut-glass designs on the lower outside of vessel.

    Loved your articled on glasses.
Surprised that you say not to wash your Brandy glasses with soap. I have a collection of Waterford Crystal and always give them a final rinse in clean water with a few spoons of vinegar.
They still look good after 20 years.

Sorry, I should have said Champagne as this is the one that you mentioned not to wash with soap but does this apply to Brandy glasses as well. Both glasses would appear to be lead crystal.

  4. Thank you Tara! Now I know! Such an informative article – I can now tweek the info on my glass collection at Retro & Co and appear well informed and so clever!! More please. Good Health!
