Manchester’s vintage shops
American Graffitiis an eye-popping fancy dress/vintage shop on Hilton Street, its wild window dressing is always a talking point. Once inside you may feel as though you’ve stepped backstage on a touring panto, such is the array of costumes and retro accessories. The staff have great knowledge of different eras and can help you to pick out whatever you’re looking for, from post-war glamour puss to Sixties flower child. There’s also an impressive range of homeware, all one-of-a-kind items lovingly handpicked, so why not invest in an Elvis egg cup?
Help your wardrobe and the world at the same time by heading to Oxfam Originals (Oldham Street). Set up as a place to make the most of the vintage clothes donated to Oxfam, it’s generally a mixed bag, good for men’s suits and occasionally has stunning dresses. The prices are very reasonable and it’s all going to charity. Spend with a clean conscience knowing that you’re doing it for the planet!
You can’t miss the incredible Affleck’s Palace (52 Church Street) boasting three floors of independent retailers, tattooists, cafes and skate shops. Afflecks is the heart and soul of the Northern Quarter and has survived threats of redevelopment to emerge stronger than ever. Inside, vintage delights can be found at Attic (3rd floor), Vintage Clothing (nuff said), Wanderland Boutique (3rd) Zeffa, and Lost Property. Finishing touches can be found at Prior Jewels on the 2nd floor. And when you’re done, why not pop into Mandy Moo’s Milkshake Bar ( 1st floor) for a Happy Day’s moment.
Newbies to the scene are Blue Rinse Vintage (31 Tib Street) who also trade on eBay. Their vast shop has a satisfying range of stock, worthy of a good rummage. They also stock a range of their own printed tees and jumpers.
