1. Pretty jewellery

Nothing transforms a simple outfit into a summery look more easily than some pretty jewellery. Team a simple Forties tea dress, a Fifties full skirt and white blouse combo or an A-line Sixties dress with some bamboo bracelets or a mid-century Hawaii necklace for an instant Tiki feel. For a more subtle look , try some Forties celluloid earrings like these beautiful flower buds. If you want to make more of a statement choose a set, like these starfish earrings with matching brooch.

2. Daytime shoes

Vintage shoes don’t just have to be for evening wear, you can easily find comfortable pairs to wear to work. You can get some cool Eighties pumps, such as these butterfly ones, which tend to have a fairly low heel for comfort. Seventies sandals such as this fake croc pair often have sturdy, thicker heels which makes them easier to walk in. If you’re a seasoned heel-wearer you could go for a more dressy pair such as these diamante applique ones – just subtle enough for day wear – or these black heels with silk bows that would work for both day or evening.

3. A dainty handbag

A small, dainty handbag for days when you don’t have to lug all your stuff around with you makes a great accessory. You could get a nautical one like this Fifties beaded bag or this simple navy cloth bag which would look great with just a pair of pedal pushers and a simple stripey T-shirt. For a more dressed-up look you can never go wrong with a small beaded bag like this floral Fifties one – perfect for a summers day. If you can manage to stick to a few essentials only (I somehow never can…) a dainty vintage bag would be perfect for work too. This Sixties one has an amazing bamboo handle but is yet subtle enough for work.

4. Evening jewellery

A great gown needs some grand accessories, so indulge in some lavish (but affordable) jewels for evening wear. This early Fifties Art Deco-inspired ruby necklace would look amazing with a low-cut dress while the tear-drop necklace of the same era would look great worn high up like a choker. Earrings are a more subtle way of adding an extra layer of elegance. These Fifties red and pearl earrings or this Forties-does-Twenties pair would look amazing with a short hair style ala Audrey Hepburn or Liz Taylor.

5. A veiled hat

While there are so many vintage hat styles to try, nothing feels quite so elegant and lady-like as a veiled one. This bright pink early Sixties hat sure is a show stopper – I’d team it with a simple shift dress and white glove Jackie O. style. For a more subtle style try out a fascinator or hair accessory like this pretty rose hat or brilliant brown polka dot one. But if you are after drama, choose a black number like this classic Forties wool felt hat.
