Exclusive interview: we quiz pin-up model Bernie Dexter
QoV: Do you have any vintage designer idols?
Bernie Dexter: Alfred Shaheen is one my favorite vintage designer, he is famous for his Hawaiian prints. He also made gorgeous Hawaiian dresses and playsuits. The great thing is there is a company called Whirlingturban.com and they make amazing reproductions which fit like vintage Shaheen dresses. I also love Ceil Chapman, Nudie, Emilio Pucci, Lilli Diamond, Fifties’ Frederick’s of Hollywood!
QoV: Do you have a favourite vintage era?
Bernie Dexter: Yes, the Fifties! I love 1956-1957, the way rock n roll really was reflected in fashion, and I just love juvenile delinquent fashions, dungarees, tight pullover sweaters and ballet flats.
QoV: What’s your favourite vintage piece?
Bernie Dexter: I have so many! Ahh! I would have to pick a Marge Riley gold and fringed western skirt and top. It’s amazing, and I’ve had it for 13 years.
QoV: Do you have any top tips on vintage hair and make-up?
Bernie Dexter: Yes, hot rollers. They are the key to setting your hair quickly and they smooth to add shine.
QoV: If one of our readers would like to get into pin-up modelling, where should they start?
Bernie Dexter: The best place on the net for it right now is pinuplifestyle.com. There are tons of people up there, models, designers and artists.
