If you’re planning a romantic evening this Valentine’s, impress your date with a fab Fifties look, the flattering shapes and super feminine styling are just perfect for the occasion. Here are some great ideas all based around Vivien of Holloway’s top repro styles.

The dress

The classic Fifties look offers two great dress styles, full circle and pencil. A halterneck full-circle dress is hugely flattering if you have a boyish silhouette and want to create a more curvacious shape, or if you are a little larger and want to emphasise an hourglass outline. The halterneck will give you a great bustline – without being over the top sexy – while the cut pulls in at your waist and skims over hips and bum. Vivien of Holloway have a huge range of full-circle dresses, including satin and flower prints. For extra swoosh and that great full shape, wear with a petticoat.

Alternatively go for a slimline pencil dress. The wasp waist looks extra tiny with a waist clincher belt while the boned and lined bodice lifts the bust into a subtle bullet and gently nips in the waist. Again there’s a huge range of colours and fabrics including sateen, lace and flower prints. For the uber Romantics out there there’s also this red and white heart-printed version.

The jacket

Your full-circle dress will look best paired with a bolero, which won’t take away any of the full-skirted shape of the dress. Either go with a matching colour or completely contrast – both was common in the Fifties.

If you’re opting for a pencil dress, a swagger jacket will make a perfect match. The exaggerated shawl colour is typically Fifties, and you have a choice of plain coloured (in black, camel or fuchsia) or plaid versions. Either way, this is one stylish and warm cover-up that also looks fab paired with pedal pushers or pencil skirts.

The accessories

Adding a simple hair flower will add a finishing touch to your look. Either go for romance with a single rose or add an exotic flower for a tropical touch. If you’re after something more fun, this cherry clip will be perfect to finish off any up-do, plus you can also use it as a show clip!

A piece of statement jewellery makes a great alternative if you’d rather leave your hair unadorned. This zebra bangle would go so well with a simple pencil dress, or if you’re after something a bit more sparkly why not add this beautiful diamante flower brooch to your dress or jacket.
