Coco Before Chanel: exclusive interview with costume designer Catherine Leterrier
QoV: Which is your favourite costume of the film?
Catherine Leterrier: I love the tomboy outfit Audrey wears. It’s so simple and yet incredibly modern.
QoV: How was it to work with Audrey?
Catherine Leterrier: Oh it was lovely and great fun! She is such a good Chanel, isn’t she! Chanel is one of my favourite designers – one of the most exciting cutouriers – and Audrey plays her perfectly.
QoV: Did you get to have a look at the Chanel archive?
Catherine Leterrier: Yes I did! It was a really strange experience because everything is wrapped up and kept in boxes of course, it looks more like a library or morgue than a giant wardrobe. You have to browse through pictures and then ask for each look to be brought to you. It was amazing to see all these originals though.
QoV: What’s happening to the costumes now?
Catherine Leterrier: They will be going on a tour, then some will go to the Chanel Museum and some will become permanent items at the Cinematheque in Paris.
