Cardiff and vintage, yes really!
Northcote Lane Market, held on the first Sunday of every month just off Roath’s up and coming City Road, provides a similar vintage shopping experience, and then some. Stall holders purveying vintage clothes, shoes and jewellery as well as handmade goodies and exclusive artworks can be found sprawled out behind Milgi Lounge, an arty bar professing the ethos ‘Eat Art Drink Music’ (which also boasts an outdoor yurt lushly decorated with rich velvets and huge squishy cushions).
Clutterfly Jewellery are regular stall holders, selling handmade and custom jewellery perfect for Sailor Jerry fans, and Frankie and Delilah are there each week, displaying their beautiful handmade hair flowers as part of their new business, Vintage Lime.
Buffalo Bar, on the city’s Windsor Place, also offers a bang up-to-date vintage shopping experience. Held every couple of months (keep an eye on the website for dates), Buffalo Boutique offers 2-4-1 cocktails, Cardiff’s hottest DJs and loads of potential vintage bargains within retro-glam surroundings; think huge gold gilded mirrors, sumptuous reds, elaborate chandeliers and black and white prints.
However, the biggest vintage event in Cardiff is undoubtedly the Blind Lemon Vintage Fair, held every spring and winter at The City Hall. Attracting thousands of visitors, scores of stall holders offer all kinds of vintage treats, from bargain rails and rummage baskets to high end couture and BIBA. Edwin Dyson, organiser of the fair (which also takes place in Bristol, Cheltenham and Exeter), prides himself on looking stylish and wishes “More men were interested,” so there’s plenty on offer for dapper fellas, too.
Cardiff is by no means a vintage paradise, at least not yet, anyway. But with more fairs and markets springing up, the future certainly looks rosy for vintage lovers in the city. And these little gems ensure that for now, even the most addicted vintage lover can get their fix and lots of fabulous one-off finds along the way.
