Burlesque: a short history

| February 7, 2009 | 0 Comments

The current burlesque revival was pioneered in the mid 1990’s by troupes such as ‘The Velvet Hammer Burlesque’ in Los Angeles and independent performers who wanted to bring back the glamour of the good old days.

The new burlesque, or ’neo burlesque’ as it is commonly known, that we see performed today involves striptease, cabaret, elaborate costumes and props, as well as usually an element of humour.  Shows take place worldwide, with many conventions and competitions in the US.  Well-known modern performers include British bombshell Immodesty Blaize (see picture) and of course Dita Von Teese.

Currently, the UK burlesque scene is going strong and still growing.  Unlike strippers, burlesque performers place an emphasis on the ‘tease’ rather than the ‘strip’ and often perform for fun rather than to make a living. Performers will often strip down to nipple tassels and knickers, never fully nude.  Attitudes towards females expressing their sexuality have become a great deal more relaxed over the years compared to the days of Minsky’s!

With the introduction of the London Burlesque Festival in 2007, many clubs, music venues and private events feature burlesque performers and you can even take classes in the art of striptease at your local gym!
